Another set of lyrics for what could be an autobiographical C&W song… Hope you enjoy!
Went down to the jobs fair
To find myself a job
Went down to the jobs fair
’cause I’m no lazy slob
The lady at the jobs fair
Asked me about my skills
That lady at the job fair
Asked what gives me thrills
I said to the job fair lady
“Well, I like writing rhymes
It may not seem like much to you
But it passes all my time”
Well, the lady at the job fair
She pushed a little more
“I know you’re outta work now,
But what’d you do before?”
And I stood there at the job fair
And I described it thus:
“Every day I stood up
To get knocked down by a bus
And as I lay there bleeding
The crows would peck my eyes
And the foxes there would feast on
A tender soul surprise”
Now maybe that’s a stretch,
But that’s just the way I felt
Working for the big man
Play-ing the hand I’m dealt
There’s gotta be a better way
To live an honest life
I just wanna feed my family
My two boys and my wife
So I said to the job fair lady,
“Can’t I write for cash?
My family’s needs are simple.
Nothing all that flash.”
Well, the lady at the job fair,
She laughed right in my face.
“Poems sell for pennies!
You gotta get back in the race”
Well, if poems sell for pennies,
Then I’ll just write some more
Yes, if my poems sell for pennies
I’ll write a whole bunch more

The sentiment about no money in poetry is something I hear an lot. You echo my opinion in that it means you should try harder rather than be discouraged. Stirring words indeed.

Thanks Richard. We’ve gotta keep trying!

So, this is great. Your poems should sell for silver dollars!

Well now this one is just perfect. Ugh, a little too close to home. I’m hoping to build a ship to sail away on with my pennies. At least for now I can build them in my mind every day. Never stop!

Great plan. Maybe we’ll have enough pennies to patch up any holes in our sails by then.

We might need to change up those pennies for a lighter, more floaty currency too, just for when the waves hit. Just thinking it through!

We need to start saving our bottles….for the poems of course.

I pictured Gerard Butler in 300 saying that… “Madness? This is haiku!”

Now that is simply the best things I’ve heard all day. I absolutely love that movie. There is clearly a haiku in the ‘then we’ll fight in the shade’ comment, but my brain is tired right now. 😉

It just proves how deadlines focus the mind… especially when those deadlines involve getting two excitable monkeys into the bath!

I think that you and your little chaps should write a Daddy & Sons Cookbook! just sayin

I was going to make a joke, but actually that’s not a bad idea at all! Thanks! 🙂

Cookbooks SELL! And anytime you can add a child to something, it SELLS big time. Not that I am advocating the exploitation of children, nope, I think they would have fun and so would you. Take lots of pictures and have running commentary from and between all of you. A smash hit! You’ll have a hit on your hands.

Loved this Al! Agree 100% wish I could make lots of pennies from my writing but it seems to be a never ending slog to get to where I want to be, and social media keeps on distracting me! Good luck with your poems have to tried to publish any? Perhaps we can cheer each other on….

It’s a shame I don’t have any of those things. A cat, a ukelele, and a small family car don’t really have the same “feel”, do they! 🙂

Thoroughly enjoyed this…but, is it me are does C&W have a lot in common with the Blues? I kept hearing B.B. King as I read this!😄
LikeLiked by 1 person
That would work too… maybe it’s just that my voice doesn’t have the depth to carry that one off as I sang it to myself!

Naw, hearing your voice was great. My point is that we delight in classifying things…sometimes, I think, overly so. When I read it, it occurred to me that musical genres can be so confining. Maybe I’m nuts (uncertified at this point), but I’m convinced C&W is white folk’s Blues and Blues is black folks C&W. We have more in common than we sometimes realize?🤔🙂

I agree… I’m not actually a fan of modern C&W (I prefer old school Johnny Cash), but at its roots it’s music for the discontented, the put-upon, the heartbroken… same as the blues. Different history, same message
