This is another attempt to push me out of my comfort zone, inspired by Billy Collins’ style. I’d love to hear your thoughts 🙂
The poets take their places,
Row by row, window seats and aisles,
And begin their meditation.
Words are worked, re-worked. Conversations replayed.
Ideas fizzing after the event, safe,
No arena to test them.
The poets sit. Stare dull out of the window,
Blind to nature’s beauty, focus internal,
Among but not with.
No eye contact. Eyes lie.
Better to retreat, cast that critical gaze inward,
Than to risk rejection.
The bus stops.
The poets file out courteously,
Knowing nothing. Learning nothing.

Wow, I like it! ‘Among but not with’… I certainly feel like that a lot, and I’m not even a poet 🙂

Thanks Ruth… this channels a lot of ‘me’ too…

Much depth here Al, I think its summing up how most people respond to their challenge of “Work”

Thanks Denis. That’s an interesting take on this

It was the last line that nailed it, “knowing nothing, learning nothing” reminded me of so many managers /leaders I worked with .

There is some of “my” truth in here, too

Lots to muse over in here, Al. I like the metaphor.
Buses have a strange isolating energy that you captured well.

Oh, well that’s okay. The journey is life and we know what’s at the end of that!

Ouch! It’s how I feel ,others feel about me sometimes… and it’s how I feel about me sometimes… that aside, this is remarkable, a tour de force!

Get off the fence, Annette. Did you like it?? 😉

Like all good poetry, this stirs up the emotions. I particularly liked the ‘feel’of it and the visual representation that it brings up. In other words, I really liked it…probably should have just written that in the first place…

You started with “like all good poetry”, so I was hardly on the defensive from the off! Thanks Lily ❤

Hi AL
I love your poetry. Its power and charm always cuts deep. I find this poem chilling, the image is dark, less playful than the other poems of yours that I have read. It makes a statement well, but it’s cold. That’s my two cents.
Cheers

Wow! As an introvert you might guess I love this line: ‘Better to retreat, cast that critical gaze inward.’ Billy Collins is one of my favorite poets btw 🙂

I’ve only discovered him relatively recently, but I’m a huge fan. Only problem is, nearly every poem I read of his inspires something in me, so I go off and scribble my own poem… – I’ll never finish reading his books!

I’m sure he’d be honored to know that 🙂

I don’t know him – but I can say I absolutely love THIS!! Excellent.

It’s worth checking Billy Collins out – he writes in free verse on a range of topics, but includes regular doses of humour too. I’m just touching his hem here 🙂

Well…ok. Only because it came with Al’s Seal of Approval. I’ll bookmark now, otherwise vivacious Elizabeth shall forget in 5 minutes flat. 😉

He’s very good, it all makes complete sense to me now. He has a great delivery, and that wry wit…that is somehow familiar. You two have much in common, though he looks decidedly much less like John Cusack.

I spoke too soon. The last one, “We think you are special, just be being you,” was the line that made me laugh out loud. Thanks Al, I did need that!

Do you have Bailey’s over there? I’ve been drinking Bailey’s. Lots of it. It’s like dessert alcohol. What’s not to love?

How many times can one have the chills in a 5-minute span of time? That was…just perfect. Thank-you for sharing this, it is truly something special. Bring the mint for the mojitos, we have much to discuss. You are a kindred spirit. ❤ ❤ ❤

Hope yours is more of the latter, less of the former!
