Taking a break…

I had the pleasure of attending my brother’s wedding at the weekend, and managed to go completely offline for (most of) two days. I returned to a mind-blowing 400 emails, mostly blog notifications. Even if I read and dealt with each one in a minute, that amounts to 10% of ALL my time over the weekend, waking and sleeping!

I need to scale back a bit.

Actually, a lot.

There is so much that I want to do with my writing, but trying to keep up with the endless treadmill on WordPress is exhausting. There are so many talented poets, writers and bloggers that I follow… so much is inspiring, or beautiful, or heart-felt, or just plain old-fashioned funny… but it’s a distraction from my own writing, and what I need to do.

I am off to the Isle of Wight Festival this weekend, and will be completely offline from Thursday to Monday, most likely caked in mud, and merrily light-headed/unconscious (it’s a binary thing – either one or the other) from my stash of Jack Daniels, my festival buddy.

This weekend is a good catalyst for me to take a bit more of a break and re-charge the batteries.

So … drum roll… I’m going to take a full fortnight off from anything WordPress-y. This will be a HUGE challenge for me, but it needs to be done! (Can you help me out by being a bit less interesting and awesome for this fortnight? Please? 🙂 )

While I’m away, I’m going to write my Blogifesto – my promises to you – and I’ll share that with you in a couple of weeks. I’ve got a couple of other things up my sleeve that I hope you’re gonna love too…

Have a great fortnight, whatever you’re going to be doing. I hope you’ll still be here when I come back! 🙂

  1. There’s quite a good dinosaur attraction in Sandown (you may want to keep that quiet in Chez Lane or a couple of small boys will want to come with you).
Have a great break, matey. Hope you’re a happy jack when you come back.
How are you getting there? Taking the 5:15? Or the Magic Bus? Keep away from Baba O’Reilly (I won’t get fooled again).
    I’ll get me coat…

  2. Good for you, Al. Being as active as you are online must be pretty draining. I felt the same during the A-Z challenge and find this while blogging “commitment” a toss-up, since all the time spent on WordPress is time not spent writing articles or my book… Have a great weekend and a relaxing two weeks.

  3. Wonderful, Al. This blog thing is so wonderful and such a time gobbler. Finding a way to make it work along with writing and having a life with family and friends is an on-going challenge. A fortnight will pass in a snap. Enjoy enjoy enjoy and don’t even think about blogging – it’s certainly will be here when you get back. 😀

  4. Have a lovely fortnight. I have purposely limited the blogs I follow for this very reason. It’s supposed to be fun, not a chore! And it’s a very easy way to avoid “working”. So good for you, have a great break, work it out and come back refreshed.

You could probably work out the weather pattern from my blog postings, actually. If it’s sunny, I’m not blogging!

  5. I am SO jealous that you’re going to the Isle Of Wight Festival. Sling some mud for me when you get there. And don’t worry about me being a bit less interesting and awesome. I got that one in the bag!

Have a fantastic time Al. We’ll all still be here when you get back. 🙂

  6. Well, you know me, my life is dull, nothing interesting ever happens and I never have anything to write or say in a comment. 😉
Enjoy the Isle of Wight. Loved it when I went.

  7. I know exactly how you feel Al. That is also the reason I have had a bit of a break too, and for a while I am just drifting in and out of blogland until probably after the bash!
Have a fabulous time, and of course, we will be here when you come back. ♥

  8. Now I don’t have to cry because I haven’t had anyone to write silly rhymes about boats with. Bruce & I will be patiently waiting, and slicing away, for whenever you return. Have a great time! Don’t you even dare responding to this message. Here – for good measure I’ll throw in the words “scones are delicious with dark chocolate nibs” – now it’ll probably wind up in your spam folder. Enjoy that family!! 🙂
