OctPoWriMo #21 – The End of the World and Everything In It

June Carter sang me a song today…

Some day the flood is coming
To wipe us from this land
Things have gone downhill
It’s all got out of hand

No power on earth can stop it
It’s all too late for that
No point tryin’ to fight it
So go and hug your cat

And when those raindrops start to fall
Greet them with a smile
Go and hug your cat goodbye and
Greet. Them. With. A. Smile.

As the water starts to rise
And wash away your stuff
Don’t waste time in doubting,
Have I done enough?

There’s time for one last email
And maybe then a tweet
To say goodbye to this old world
This time you got me beat

So when those raindrops start to fall
Greet them with a smile
Go and hug your cat goodbye and
Greet. Them. With. A. Smile.

Well that water’s rising really fast
Your defences overwhelmed
No point looking round for help
It’s the same across the realm

As the water pulls you under
There’s no time for regrets
Just hope that you go quickly,
Cuz that’s as good as it gets

So when those raindrops start to fall
Greet them with a smile
Go and hug your cat goodbye and
Greet. Them. With. A.
Smile.

OctPoWriMo #20 – Real Love

It’s the grit not the pearl
Wherein love is found
Working through your problems
And sticking around

It’s turning up each day
Putting in the hours
Love is in the listening:
Not in hearts and flowers

The grit makes the pearl
Slowly over time
Layer upon layer
Beautiful, sublime

OctPoWriMo #19 – Dear John

Dear John

We were always wrong, John
Our love was never strong, John
(I know I bought a thong, John
But I’m not stringing you along, John)

We never were a song, John
Just a bing and a bong, John
A clashing of the gong, John
That went on too long, John

I feel our time has gone, John
No need to prolong, John
We just don’t belong, John
I’d like to get along, John…

But frankly, John… You pong!

OctPoWriMo #16 – Paradelle

Lying here to rest
Lying here to rest
Comfortably numb
Comfortably numb
Comfortably lying
To rest here, numb

Hoping forever
Hoping forever
Love will never end
Love will never end
Never, forever
Hoping love will end

Apathy in boredom, cycles
Apathy in boredom, cycles
Black holes of hope
Black holes of hope
Apathy in hope
Black holes; cycles of boredom

Black holes of love
Lying here and hoping
Forever numb
To never rest comfortably
Boredom cycles
Hope will end apathy

A very complicated challenge today… not sure about this at all!

OctPoWriMo #15 – If I Had The Power

If I had the power, just for one day,
To shake up the world, re-set it my way
I’d start with the users, abusers,
The back-alley bruisers.

Line up the losels, the lawyers (the liars),
Froth-spewing firebrands casting hell-fire,
Pinheads in pinstripes, pushing round paper,
Washing their guilt, down with a chaser,

Round up the reivers, the rough-riding robbers,
Red-tape bureaucrats, acting the jobsworth,
Bullies and backstabbers. Ballyrags too.
Sweet-talking spinners, selling their view,

Day-dreaming drifters with stars in their eyes,
Death-dealing doctors, donning disguise,
Wheedlers and wastrels with whispering ways,
Pouring out poison, polluting their praise.

If I had the power, just for one day,
I’d shake up the world, re-set it my way.
I’d bring these all in (not heads on a pike):
Just make them “be nice”. To see what it’s like.

Today’s prompt: Imagine if today was the day where you could do anything you wanted… http://www.octpowrimo.com/

OctPoWriMo #14: Edge of Tomorrow

Standing on the edge of tomorrow,
The future not yet set.
Closing my eyes and edging forward,
The best it’s gonna get

The whole world’s just a change away
From being something else
You’ve gotta let go of everything
But hang on to yourself

This is today’s contribution to OctPoWriMo – a challenge to write a poem a day during October. Today’s prompt was a bridge between today and tomorrow. I have to admit – these are more lyrics than a poem, in my head.

OctPoWriMo #13 – Risky Business (poem)

My face doesn’t fit
I don’t belong
I had potential
It’s all gone wrong

Nobody gets me
The smiles are false
I was meant for more
A part of the pulse

But I’m just a tourist
No right to be here
Not built for better
Living in fear

I’m feeling exposed
Nowhere to hide
It’s time for some truth:
Drop the disguise

This is today’s contribution to OctPoWriMo – a challenge to write a poem a day during October. Today’s challenge was to take some risks, and consider the prompts: Exposed – Honesty – Chance

OctPoWriMo #12 – Easy As… (poem)

Always
Break
Conventions

Always
Be
Challenging
Accepted
Boundaries &
Constraints

Anarchy
Breeds
Creativity!

This is today’s contribution to OctPoWriMo – a challenge to write a poem a day during October. Today’s prompt was: Write a poem that is 26 lines. Each line begins with a different letter of the alphabet. A, B, C… as you can see, I haven’t exactly followed that approach!

OctPoWriMo #10 – Success (poem)

Today’s prompt was to sing about our successes… I recently passed some significant (for me) milestones in terms of numbers reading this blog, so I thought about writing about that. But having also come across both blogs that have amazing poetry (and hardly any likes) and some blogs that have nothing but awful, incomprehensible doggerel (and a bizarre number of likes), I’ve decided to take a different tack. BTW – if I’ve visited your blog more than once, the latter is not aimed at you!

Made it to some milestones
For followers and views
But that’s no validation
For the poetic path I choose

So I won’t share those numbers:
They’re personal to me.
No need to brag and boast
About my vanity

I’m not playing the numbers game
So thanks for your attention.
Success is individual.
Not a competition
