Yesterday, the world was young,
Then everything got turned
Mother Nature got her payback
On lessons never learned
Last week, the world was young
I’ve been running ever since
All those friends lost that way
Memories make me wince
Last month, the world was young
It seems so far away
Foraging for lifelines
Surviving day by day
Last year, the world was young
And I have grown so old
The horrors of the world reborn
Innocence bought and sold
I remember when the world was young,
Full of hope and love, and free
One day it may be young again
Our humanity holds the key

Thought-provoking, Al. I hope humanity turns the key.

We hold both the problem and the solution in our own hands

I know. It kind of boggles the mind. 🙂

I love the structure of moving backwards in time remembering. I fear I’m approaching that age when it feels like I’ve seen it all before and this poem evokes that feeling.

Thanks Susanne. I’m glad this resonated with you. Ageing throws a host of emotions into the mix

Humanity definitely has the key Al. Let’s hope we can make the world young again .

Thanks Judy. It’s in our power, if we choose to take it… but it won’t be easy

You should have seen the poem I chose not to publish… that really is bleak! 🙂

Lovely, hits a little close to home for me! I’ll do what I always do, pretend it’s not me in the mirror, sigh…humanity will rally, I firmly believe that!

But that is you in the mirror, and you are beautiful. We are beautiful. We are humanity x

It’s about zombies…

Totally not about zombies Al. I’m going to hold a protest!! Not 2 of 2. Nope. *Smiles sweetly before her face gets eaten*

I worry that ALL my stuff now is about zombies, it’s just that sometimes I’ve removed the “z” word.
“I fell in love with a zombie
She tried to eat my face…
I still prefer her to my ex.
Her manners were a disgrace”

You may need a cleansing, or…um. SOMEthing. Evidently. I am a recovering Face Eater however, I will fully admit. The program is way more than 12 steps however.

You have no idea how many times in my life conversations have begun, “So… What exactly is wrong with you?”

Puts me in mind of the song by Roy Clark – “Yesterday, when I was young…” 🙂

I don’t know that one, but even I can see the link! This was another that is half-poem, half-lyric 🙂

Fabulous. If only we would learn, it’s all so frustrating! So many countries around the world who are only starting on their journey to be industrialised… I will miss my commenters now the challenge is over, and also miss the challenge, I write better with a deadline! Congratulations on reaching the end, as i know you will, there being only the one more day for you! http://www.lizbrownleepoet.com

Thanks Liz. Final post is queued up and ready… I write better with a deadline too, but it does end up pushing me into a love/hate relationship with it by the end!
I look forward to reading more of your work, both online and offline 😀

Ok, no time for reading all comments… I loved this Al. LOVED it 🙂
Thank you for making me think, again. And yes, I need to get some sleep. This may be my last comment for the night. I hope 😉

I’ve got over 500 poems on here… no need to try and read them all in one night 😉

Hahaha! I was just trying to play catch up with the ones I hadn’t read since I started following. Sorry about the other ones, but I may not have time to go look for them just yet! 🙂
