Been playing songs for so long
Got music in my soul
A new song every night I sing
But still I don’t feel whole
Been touring round these parts so long
And yeah I’ve had some fun
But I’m not all I could be
Cuz I’m a band of one
It looks like fun from the outside, but
This living ain’t a life
Never knowing where I’m going to,
The road my only wife
And so I take the stage each night
And whisper love’s soft words
Feeling such a fraud each time
Cuz they’re nothing like I’ve heard
If I could ever find someone
To sit with in the sun
Then maybe I could break up
This lonely band of one
And all I really need is someone
To sit with in the sun
And on that day I’ll break up
This lonely band of one

Chewed up seems a little uncharitable, but otherwise yes 🙂

That was what I meant… I’d be more of a half-sucked humbug, complete with fluff of uncertain origin!

‘Fluff of an Uncertain Origin’ is great – I think you may have hit on a title. G:)

There’s an album title that needs to be made!

Inevitably. With a 30 minute vibraphone solo

Cool, Dude. We should start writing (already have) the intro and the triple-gatefold sleeve. G:)

Not a bad thing at Al!

Well, this piece certainly feels like a song, so that’s good, right? 🙂

Aw, I felt this way as a writer, until I met up with this lot of wacky bloggers… Now, I am part of an orchestra. ❤

Aww… This is very sweet… and kind of sad… and reminds me of a piece of fiction I wrote a while back. It’s lovely. ♥

It’s not autobiographical, so it’s all good… With this singing voice? Not likely! 🙂

I’ll just sing it in my own head. With my fictional singing voice. 😛

Belt it out! I’ve no idea why I keep writing country and western songs, when I don’t even like C&W (except Johnny Cash)… See where it takes you! 🙂

Well…. I hate country (serious loathing)… So I’d be changing that up. 😀

Same here. But I can’t help myself! The original idea – Band of One – was basically me singing that line over and over in a vague mid 80s Metallica style… That any better??

Hahahaa… EVERYTHING is better than country. I mean, Metallica isn’t my favorite but I can handle that… (among other things… :P) 🙂

It’s not my favourite either, but for some reason my brain won’t write the Bowie or Frank Turner songs it feasts on!

Once upon a time not very long ago, I had quite a few comments on my posts telling me my poetry sounded like song lyrics. I’m not sure about that. Some is definitely depressing/heartbreaking enough… which tends to make great songs…

True… But definitely not c&w, right? 🙂

Oh, God no. If anyone took those words and made them country, I might have to get violent… but that’s okay, you love that about me. 😀

Really love this Al, although it makes me feel a little sad.

It is a sad tale… Just fiction though. The phrase Band of One came to me, and I had to do something with it 🙂

Yes, I guessed it was fiction, but you always write with such feeling it made me sad! 🙂

I’ll take that compliment 🙂

I’m a bit worried that his voice may not do credit to your poetry. A friend of my wife experienced a Dylan concert in Tokyo recently and he was worse than what we heard in Melbourne a couple of years back.

It’s always sad when musicians/performers of any stripe don’t know when to quit. I wish Paul McCartney had quietly retired years ago!

I thought the real one had? Are you talking about the Paul who exited this world or the one who carried on?

Haha! I wrote a short story last year, with a cast of dead celebrities. It included a young Macca 🙂
